A census has been taken every 10 years since 1801.
A census records the people living in a house at midnight on a Sunday.
Before 1841, census records were not kept and were destroyed - only a few remain.
The dates are as follows:
Sunday/Monday 6th/7th June 1841.
Sunday/Monday 30th/31st March 1851.
Sunday/Monday 7th/8th April 1861.
Sunday/Monday 2nd/3rd April 1871.
Sunday/Monday 3rd/4th April 1881.
Sunday/Monday 5th/6th April 1891.
Sunday Monday 31st March/1st April 1901.
